Diagnosing a distorted Xorg display

Check if the refresh rate is set to something odd. For my Dell Latitude C840, if the refresh rate is set to 60.6 Hz instead of 60.0 Hz, the screen becomes distorted, only becoming undistorted for a split second when changing virtual terminals.
